AUSTIN (KXAN) — Bill McRaven will step down from his position as University of Texas system chancellor in May 2018, citing chronic health issues over the past few years that have led him to rethink his future.
“There’s going to be a lot of speculation as to why I’m stepping down, but the fact is, this is a very personal decision for me,” 62-year-old McRaven said Friday, as seen in video posted online by the University of Texas.
“…over the past several months I have been dealing with some health issues,” the retired four-star admiral said. “They are not serious, let me say that again they are not serious, but they have caused me to rethink my future.”
He continued, “As I enter the fourth quarter of my life, there are still a lot of things I want to do. I want to teach, I want to write, I want to do some traveling, and as hackneyed as it sounds when someone is stepping down, I want to spend more time with my family.”
McRaven, who became chancellor in January 2015, said he’s put his career first for the last 40 years and it’s time for that to change.
