The Basaveshwara Nagar police on Monday arrested a 43-year-old businessman for allegedly strangulating his wife over a domestic row at their home on April 25.

Lokesh Kumar Gehlot, the owner of a photo studio in Cubbon Pete, had been demanding money from his wife Namitha to expand his business, forced her to get money from her parents and took ₹60,000 from her. The two had been fighting ever since, the police said. On April 24, Gehlot returned home from work and found Namitha talking to her brother on the phone.

The accused allegedly started pestering her to put the call on loudspeaker. She objected to this. A heated argument ensued between them following which the accused assaulted and strangled her to death. Gehlot then fled the scene.

Based on the complaint filed by the owner of the house, the police registered a case of murder and dowry harassment against the accused and tracked him down on Monday.
