AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday (May 5, 2025) blamed the Tamil Nadu government for having failed to contain the “soaring prices” of essential commodities.

“As a way of passing the buck, the DMK regime puts the blame on traders [for the situation],” Mr. Palaniswami said at a meeting in Maraimalai Nagar, on the outskirts of Chennai, to mark Traders’ Day.

He wanted the trading community to understand the role of the State government and explain the factual position to people. He assured the community that whether in power or not, his party would stand by the traders.

The AIADMK leader called upon the State government to provide legal protection to those running micro-enterprise units, including eateries, fruit-vending shops, and pawn shops. Full tax exemption should be given to fully indigenous enterprises, which were likely to be affected adversely by the application of state-of-the-art technology.

The levy of “stringent penalty” to be imposed on vehicles, which carried consignment, for any discrepancy should be avoided. In the event of his party capturing power in the 2026 Assembly poll, those traders who were paying taxes honestly would be rewarded, he assured them.
