Counterfeit Indian currency seized in Basirhat, 1 held
Kolkata: Counterfeit Indian currency notes with a face value of around Rs 34 lakh were seized from a house near the India-Bangladesh border at Basirhat on Sunday and one person was arrested.
The accused was identified as Sheikh Abdul Karim alias Raja. He was remanded in police custody for seven days by a Basirhat sub-divisional court. Police are investigating whether he has any connections with Bangladesh.
"Acting on a tip-off, the Special Operation Group and a team led by Matia police station OC Maloy Mondal conducted a joint raid. The seized fake notes were in denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 200, amounting to Rs 33,56,300. Blank paper cuttings matching the size of currency notes were also recovered," a senior officer of Basirhat district police said.
Baduria SDPO Rahul Mishra said: "Karim has been involved in multiple illegal activities in the past." There were theft and robbery cases registered against him at Matia police station.
