A couple from Servakaranpalayam near Suriyanallur village in Tiruppur district died after the moped they were travelling on plunged into a pit dug for the construction of a bridge early Sunday morning.

K. Nagaraj, 44, and his wife N. Anandhi, 38, died in the accident while their daughter N. Deekshaya, 12, suffered injuries.

The Kundadam police said the accident occurred around 1.30 a.m. on Sunday at Kullaaipalayam when they were heading to their residence on a moped, after visiting the temple town of Tirunallur in Thanjavur. They had reached Dharapuram bus stand after the pilgrimage and were headed towards their residence in their moped.

The police said that traffic was allowed only along one side of the road at the construction site of the bridge as the other side had been dug up and barricaded. Nagaraj allegedly lost control of the moped while crossing the section and hit a barricade, and the three fell into a depth of about 10 feet. The concrete base worsened the impact of the fall, said a police officer.

While the couple died on the spot, the girl suffered a fracture on her right leg and other minor injuries. She was admitted to a private hospital in Coimbatore, said the police. Tiruppur District Collector T. Christuraj and Tiruppur District Superintendent of Police Yadav Girish visited the accident spot on Sunday morning. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families after post-mortem at the Government Hospital, Dharapuram, on Sunday.
