VW is set to launch the Golf GTi in India as a limited-run performance hatchback

Volkswagen India is all set to begin bookings for the much-anticipated Golf GTi on May 5. This marks the debut of the iconic hatchback in the Indian market, with the model being offered as a Completely Built Unit in limited numbers. A total of 250 units have been allocated for the first batch, and interested buyers will be able to place bookings exclusively via Volkswagen India’s official website. Deliveries are slated to commence in June through select dealerships.

Performance and Drivetrain

Under the hood, the Golf GTi will feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 265 HP and 370 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, driving the front wheels. The hot hatch is equipped with an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock, enhancing grip and stability during spirited driving.

Volkswagen claims that the Golf GTi can accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in 5.9 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/hr. This performance positions it ahead of its closest competitor in the Indian market, the Mini Cooper S, which produces 204 HP from a similar-displacement engine.

Design and Exterior Highlights

Staying true to its sporty character, the Golf GTi features signature GTi design elements such as 18-inch alloy wheels, distinctive badging and dual exhaust outlets. The front fascia is accentuated by a unique five-piece lighting setup that blends into the grille from the LED daytime running lights.

Volkswagen will offer the GTi in four exterior paint options: Grenadilla Black Metallic, Oryx White Premium, Moonstone Grey Black and Kings Red Premium.

Interior and Equipment

Inside, the Golf GTi draws several features from the Tiguan R Line, including a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Enhancing its sporty appeal are a GTi-specific steering wheel, sports seats with GTi branding and the classic tartan fabric upholstery that pays homage to the model’s legacy.

Pricing and Market Position

Although official pricing is yet to be revealed, estimates suggest the Golf GTi will be priced above Rs. 50 lakhs (ex-showroom), largely due to its CBU status and premium positioning. This pricing puts it directly in contention with the Mini Cooper S, which currently retails between Rs. 44.90 lakhs and Rs. 55.90 lakhs (ex-showroom).
