Cleric of madrassa detained in Amreli
Rajkot: The Special Operations Group (SOG) of Amreli district detained a cleric of a madrassa in Dhari taluka for questioning after he couldn't produce adequate identity documents.
As part of the state-wide drive following the Pahalgam terror attack, the SOG carried out identity verifications to trace people staying illegally.
Speaking to TOI, Dhari division Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jayveer Gadhvi said the cleric, who is a native of Juhapura in Ahmedabad, presented an Aadhaar card but no other documents requested. His mobile phone, which was seized, revealed that he was a member of seven WhatsApp groups linked to Pakistan and Afghanistan.
A non-cognizable offence was lodged, and the police said they would take him to Ahmedabad for further verification.
Initial interrogation suggested that the cleric resided at the madrassa for about a month. A soft copy of his passport was also recovered.
His mobile phone was seized and handed over to a technical team for forensic analysis.
