Rajasthan Royals will look to keep their slim hopes of qualifying for the IPL 2025 Playoffs alive as they look to bring down high-flying Mumbai Indians in match no. 50 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Thursday. The Royals stunned Gujarat Titans in their last match by eight wickets thanks to 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s brilliant maiden century.
While the hosts still retain a mathematical chance of making the playoffs, the management seems to have quietly come to terms with their likely fate. A side strain to skipper Sanju Samson opened the door for Suryavanshi’s debut, and in just three innings, the young prodigy has become the talk of the cricketing world. Samson, sidelined since April 16, remains uncertain for a return, leaving Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal to continue at the top. Their 166-run opening partnership against Gujarat Titans made light work of a daunting 210-run chase.
Having dismantled a bowling attack full of international stars, all eyes will be on how the left-handed Suryavanshi handles the challenge of facing Jasprit Bumrah. Further down the order, Shimron Hetmyer will be under pressure, having struggled to find his explosive touch this season on slower pitches.
A key factor in the Royals’ underwhelming run has been their inability to close out games from winning positions. In the pace attack, while Jofra Archer has delivered crucial breakthroughs, his economy rate hovers near 10 runs per over. Sandeep Sharma has also been expensive, with none of the frontline bowlers managing an economy under nine.
For the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians, Bumrah’s return has coincided perfectly with their surge to the top of the table. The perennial slow starters have now strung together five consecutive wins and appear unstoppable.
A major positive for MI in their last outing was debutant Corbin Bosch, who impressed with a strike rate of 200 and chipped in with a wicket. With Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma firing on all cylinders, MI look to be peaking at just the right time — a worrying sign for the rest of the league.
