Biker killed in accident involving speeding SUV near Saggu Chowk in Ludhiana.
Ludhiana: A 33-year-old motorcyclist was killed on Wednesday after a speeding jeep allegedly driven by a woman struck and crushed him during a U-turn near Saggu Chowk. The driver fled the scene on foot, abandoning the vehicle.
The victim, Sukhwinder Singh of Rishi Nagar, met with this accident around noon. The impact hurled the jeep into the shutter of a nearby warehouse, crushing Sukhwinder Singh beneath it. He was declared dead shortly after being moved to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. Eyewitnesses said the woman behind the wheel had escaped before police had arrived, leaving the jeep at the crash site.
Officers from Division Number 8 police station reached the scene and impounded the jeep. They are now working to identify the vehicle's registered owner and trace the woman suspected of driving. Inspector Amritpal Sharma, the station house officer (SHO) concerned, said on the basis of preliminary investigations that the driver had lost control of the jeep during the turn due to speeding. "The jeep struck the biker and then flew into a godown shutter. The victim was crushed under the vehicle," he said.
Police have informed the victim's family and started recording their statements for preparing to register a formal case. "The process of lodging an FIR (first-information report) has started, and we are verifying ownership details of the jeep to identify and apprehend the accused," Inspector Sharma added.
