With the River Conservation Division of the Water Resources Department (WRD) taking up the second phase of desilting of the Upparu, the drainage canal in Lalgudi taluk would be fully cleared of silt this financial year.

The canal is being desilted for a length of about 4 km at an estimated cost of about ₹1.10 crore.

In 2024-25, the canal was desilted for about 4 km from its tail-end at an estimate of ₹91.10 lakh.

The division is executing about 115 works at an estimate of ₹16.70 crore in the district under special desilting work, which would help improve irrigation to 1.18 lakh acres of cultivable land.

On Thursday, R. Dhayalakumar, Chief Engineer, WRD, Tiruchi Region, inspected the work at Upparu drain at Neikuppai along with A. Nityanandam, and Rajendran, Executive Engineers, and P. Muruganandam, Assistant Executive Engineer, WRD.
