The Telangana Crime Investigation Department (CID) apprehended a senior functionary of a dubious multi-level marketing (MLM) firm accused of defrauding hundreds of people to the tune of ₹5 crore through a binary scheme promising high returns.
The arrest follows a complaint lodged by Kodela Bhadraiah, a resident of Chityal in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, who alleged that Lalith Mohan Varma, chairman and managing director of Maya Care Welfare Society based in Uttar Pradesh, launched an online MLM operation in the guise of a welfare scheme.
A case was registered by the CID Police Station, Hyderabad, and on directions from Director General of CID, Shikha Goel, a CID team from Warangal Regional Office tracked down and arrested Anand Varma, son of Omanshu Kumar Verma, 49, general secretary of Maya Care Welfare Society.
The scheme, allegedly run under a binary structure, lured nearly 400 unsuspecting individuals, including unemployed youth, into investing lakhs on the promise of exponential returns.
The arrest was made on April 24 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The accused was subsequently brought to Warangal and remanded to judicial custody. Authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining accused in the case.
