Renault names upcoming 7-seater SUV ‘Boreal’, global model inspired by Duster

Renault has officially revealed the name of its new 7-seater SUV — the Boreal. This upcoming model, set to make its debut in Brazil, will mark the brand’s latest addition to its global product lineup. Following its initial launch in Latin America, the SUV will gradually be introduced in 70 international markets, excluding Europe.

A Thoughtful Naming Approach

According to Renault, the name Boreal draws inspiration from both mythology and nature. It is derived from Boreas, the Greek god associated with the north wind and also reflects the Latin term for “north wind.” The company views the name as a symbol of strength, elegance and sophistication. Sylvia dos Santos, Renault’s Naming Strategy Manager, noted that the name also brings to mind the aurora borealis or Northern Lights, further reinforcing its aspirational image.

Product Positioning and Platform

The Boreal is expected to serve as the 7-seater counterpart to the Duster, Renault’s well-known compact SUV. Designed to offer enhanced comfort and presence, it aims to embody core values such as technology, status and passenger comfort. The SUV will be based on the same platform as the upcoming Duster, which Renault also plans to reintroduce in markets like India.

India Launch Timeline

While the global unveiling is set for the coming months, the Boreal is anticipated to arrive in India by 2026. It will be a significant part of Renault’s broader product expansion under its International Game Plan 2027 strategy, which focuses on strengthening its footprint across global markets outside Europe.
