Shivamogga Lok Sabha member B.Y. Raghavendra on Tuesday met Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre and appealed to him to issue an order to redraw the protective layer around the Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary in Shivamogga and limit the ecologically sensitive area around the forest to a radius of one km.

The Central government had given its consent to redraw the boundary of the Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary, as a large area was included in the area by mistake decades ago. Now the State government had to issue an order to rectify it, he said.

Regarding the ongoing joint survey of the land for the benefit of people displaced by the Sharavathi Dam, Mr. Raghavendra requested the Minister to submit the list of people cultivating the forest land to the Centre at the earliest. The survey is being done following the Supreme Court’s suggestion that the Centre and State resolve the issue of granting land to the displaced amicably.

Further, the Lok Sabha member urged Mr. Khandre to grant an allowance of ₹5 crore to build walk-through aviary facilities at Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari in Shivamogga. The project would boost tourism, he added.
