The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday alleged that the BJP government removed 2,000 Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses from the city’s fleet, leading to an increase in commuters’ waiting time at bus stands.
In response, BJP Delhi spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor termed the allegation “misleading”. However, he said “some overage buses” have been taken off the roads, without revealing the exact numbers.
Mr. Kapoor said in 10 years, the previous AAP government led by Arvind Kejriwal had not added new buses to the DTC fleet. “As a result, all buses currently in the DTC and cluster fleet are over 10 years old and completed their legal fitness life between 2023 and 2024,” he said.
The BJP spokesperson also said Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will unveil 400 new buses on May 2.
‘Enabling corruption’
AAP chief spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar alleged that the BJP government was planning to issue new tenders to private players in the Capital, thereby enabling “corruption”.
She said commuters are suffering as the government has failed to make alternative arrangements. “In this heat, bus stands are packed with people waiting for buses. Under the [previous] AAP government, commuters had to wait no more than a minute for a bus at any stop.”
