Maruti Suzuki E Vitara India Debut

Maruti’s first all-electric car launch delayed, deliveries commence in September

Maruti Suzuki’s first electric SUV, the e Vitara, has faced yet another delay, with company Chairman R.C. Bhargava confirming that deliveries will now commence by the end of September 2025. Initially unveiled at the Auto Expo earlier this year, the e-Vitara was originally slated for launch in March 2025, marking a delay of roughly six months.

Alongside the announcement of the revised timeline, Bhargava revealed that a significant portion of this year’s e Vitara production will be earmarked for international markets. Out of the expected 70,000 units to be produced at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility over the next six to seven months, the majority will be allocated for export, particularly to Japan and Europe. This marks a shift from earlier projections, where around 50 percent of production was intended for overseas markets.

The e Vitara has already seen one major postponement, with production initially pushed back from September 2024 to February 2025 due to issues related to battery supply and software development. While Maruti Suzuki has not officially disclosed the reasons behind this second delay, it is anticipated that Toyota’s version of the SUV, the Urban Cruiser EV, could also face similar setbacks.

In terms of market positioning, the e Vitara is expected to carry an on-road price ranging between Rs. 20 lakhs and Rs. 30 lakhs. When it launches, it will compete directly with models like the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, Tata Curvv EV & the MG ZS EV. Maruti’s electric SUV will be available with two battery options — 49kWh and 61kWh. While an all-wheel-drive variant is planned for international markets, it is unlikely to be introduced in India initially.

Despite the delays, Maruti Suzuki is positioning the e Vitara as a critical part of its global EV strategy, with exports playing a major role in the model’s rollout this year. Pricing details and variant lineups for the Indian market are expected to be revealed closer to the commencement of deliveries.
