Hindu or Muslim, no leniency for pro-Pak or B’desh remarks: Himanta
Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said nobody, whether the person is Hindu or Muslim, will be spared if they make any remark in favour of Pakistan or Bangladesh. This statement comes amid the arrest of 16 people in the state for alleged pro-Pakistan social media posts.
The CM said he has issued a blanket order to the Assam Police not to be lenient in such cases and to apply NSA charges if necessary.
Since last Thursday, police have arrested 16 people from different parts of the state, including three recent arrests: Dadhichi Dimple alias Dimple Bora in Golaghat, Tahib Ali in Tamulpur, and Bimal Mahato in Udalguri. The arrests follow heightened surveillance of social media platforms in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Dimple Bora was detained by the crime branch in Guwahati for allegedly making "controversial" comments about the Pahalgam terror attack. She was later handed over to Golaghat police for further investigation.
The first arrest in this series was All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam, who was arrested on Thursday on charges of treason. Islam had allegedly made controversial remarks in a video circulated on social media, claiming that the Pahalgam massacre was a "conspiracy by the central govt" to incite religious discord. He also linked the incident to the 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing that killed 40 CRPF personnel. A local court has remanded him to four days of police custody.
Following Islam's arrest, the CM posted on X, stating that Assam will not tolerate any person who directly or indirectly supports or defends Pakistan in connection with the Pahalgam attack in Kashmir.
The CM further announced that the govt is going to conduct a drive soon to find out how many people are residing in Assam who did not apply for their name entry in NRC but have Aadhar. "Moreover, we have also prepared a plan of action to identify people who illegally entered Assam in the last few years and expel them," he added.
