Gurgaon: For the second consecutive day, the city saw its mercury touch 40 degrees Celsius with the maximum temperature reaching 40.3 degrees Celsius on Saturday, higher than the normal for this time of the year by 0.4 notches.
The minimum temperature, meanwhile, was at 20.8 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than the normal of 23.5 degrees Celsius for this time of year.
A dust storm also hit the city around 3pm and gusty winds blew at the speed of 30 kmph.
In view of the rising temperatures, India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for a heat wave at isolated places in Haryana, including Gurgaon, till May 2.
The alert also includes warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph at isolated locations.
Further, residents were advised to take necessary precautions to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours. The weather department also urged people to stay indoors during thunderstorms.
A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and is at least 4.5 notches above the normal temperature for a season. When the maximum temperature rises above 6.4 degrees Celsius from the normal, IMD calls it a severe heatwave.
