Surat: In a massive crackdown against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, Gujarat Police on Saturday detained more than 1,000 of them, including women and children, in Ahmedabad and Surat. While at least 890 Bangladeshis were detained in Ahmedabad, 134 were detained in Surat.
In Surat city, the drive was carried out during the early hours of Saturday. Multiple police teams involving personnel from different police stations, SOG and DCB were part of the drive.
Those detained were taken to the city police headquarters for verification. "After verification of their documents, they will be deported to Bangladesh. Family members of these individuals will also be sent back," said a senior police officer.
Minister of state (MoS) for home Harsh Sanghavi said, "A major operation was carried out in the city during the night to catch illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. While 890 were detained in Ahmedabad, 134 were nabbed in Surat. It is the biggest drive by Gujarat Police till now against illegal immigrants."
Sanghavi claimed that the illegal immigrants entered India using bogus documents obtained from West Bengal. He also said that using these forged papers, the Bangladesh nationals procured identity documents in India.
"Many of them live in Gujarat and other states. Many of them are part of drug cartels and human trafficking networks. Two illegal Bangladesh immigrants arrested recently were part of an Al-Qaeda sleeper cell," he said.
In a warning, Sanghavi said: "Those living illegally in India should surrender to a police station in two days, or else actions will be taken against them.'' The minister also issued a warning to those providing shelter to the illegal immigrants.
The minister said arrangements were made "to complete all the procedures for deportation of the illegal Bangladeshis as soon as possible".
"We will also investigate fake documents they used to reach different parts of the country and Gujarat, and action will be taken against those who created the fake documents," he added.
Sanghavi said the police had been instructed to take action against illegal immigrants across Gujarat, and a clear order had been given to Pakistani nationals to leave Gujarat as per the decision taken by the central govt.
In Ahmedabad, director general of police (DGP) Vikas Sahay said the detainees were being questioned, and their nationality was being established based on documentary and other evidence.
"Once the police establish that they are Bangladeshi nationals, the process of their deportation will be carried out at the earliest in coordination with the central government and BSF," he said. (With PTI)
