Guwahati: Assam chief minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday issued a stern warning, stating that individuals offering support to Pakistan, whether direct or indirect, would be charged under the National Security Act (NSA). Following the Pahalgam incident, authorities have arrested 14 people, including AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam, for expressing ‘pro-Pakistan' sentiments in Assam.
During a media interaction at the state BJP headquarters, Sarma highlighted the antagonistic relationship between India and Pakistan, affirming their continued status as adversaries. Assam officials have taken into custody those allegedly making pro-Pakistan remarks, particularly on social platforms. "I would also like to say that whoever would support Pakistan, directly or indirectly, we will slap NSA on them," Himanta said.
Responding to queries about MLA Aminul Islam's questioning of the Indian govt's stance on the Pahalgam terror incident, Sarma said, "I cannot answer how people dare to make anti-national statements. But I can assure that those who dare too much, we can make arrangements to deal with them firmly." He said Aminul's perspective might align with Pakistan's interests but contradicts India's position. "There is no common ground for India and Pakistan. We are enemies and will continue to be enemies," Himanta said.
The CM declared that individuals making anti-India statements would face arrest and possible NSA charges. He confirmed that authorities are scrutinising social media posts expressing anti-India sentiments. "Whichever posts are anti-India, we will take action," Sarma said.
At a separate function in the city, Sarma mentioned ongoing police investigations regarding anti-India comments. He emphasised that supporters of Pakistan across various media platforms would face consequences.
On Saturday morning, Sarma announced via ‘X' that Cachar Police arrested Baktar Hussain Barbhuiya from Ramnagar under Sonai Police Station and Imran Hussain Borbhuiya from Malugram Ganiwala under Silchar Police Station for ‘pro-Pakistan' social media content.
Later that day, authorities arrested Dimple Barua from Guwahati for her social media comments about the Pahalgam incident, and Congress leader Bimal Mahato from Orang for alleged anti-Indian remarks. A youth from Hajo near Guwahati was also detained on similar charges.
One Sumon Mazumdar alias Bulbul Alom Mazumdar was arrested by Hailakandi Police, whereas one Mashud Azhar was arrested by Nagaon Police, as informed by CM Sarma on Saturday evening.
"Total 14 arrests made till now against people who have made seditious comments," Sarma wrote on ‘X'
On Friday, authorities arrested Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti's Biswanath district secretary, Anil Bania, for anti-India comments. Additionally, Mustak Ahmed from Saykut village under Karimganj Police Station was detained for posting ‘Pakistan Zindabad' on Facebook.
