After US vice president JD Vance said at Jaipur that India and the United States have finalised terms for trade negotiations, President Donald Trump yesterday indicated receiving confirmation suggesting India intends to lower tariffs on certain goods.

Vance is on a four-day official visit to India that ends today.

"I understand that India will reduce tariffs," he told reporters in the Oval Office.

US and Indian officials started formal three-day negotiations on a planned bilateral trade agreement (BTA) in Washington yesterday to sort out trade issues and move the talks forward, a news agency reported. The talks will cover tariffs, non-tariffs and facilitation of customs.

The planned agreement will offer opportunities to employees, farmers and businesses from both sides as well as further access to US products in marketplaces abroad, the office of the US trade representative said.

The United States aims at achieving more access, a reduction in tariffs and pledges of assurance of longer-term benefits.
