The Department of School Education has transferred the headmistress and a teacher of Government Middle School in Chinna Varigam village, falling under Madhanur panchayat union, near Ambur town in Tirupattur, for celebrating marriage anniversary on the campus during school hours a few days ago.

Education officials said headmistress S. Sarojini and teacher K. Sudhakar were transferred based on an inquiry carried out by block education officer, Madhanur. The order was issued by R. Malaiarasan, District Education Officer (Elementary), Tirupattur. “School campus should be utilised only for learning purposes for students. The inquiry found that the headmistress and the teacher were at fault,” said Mr. Malaiarasan.

Initial inquiry revealed that the school has around 100 students, including girls with at least five teachers. On Tuesday (April 22), a group of teachers, led by the headmistress, gathered in the headmistress room, during lunch break. The teachers pooled in money and bought cake and sweets to celebrate the marriage anniversary of teacher Sudhakar and his wife S. Sournamugi, who works as a temporary teacher on contract basis in the school. Apart from teachers, other staff, including attendants participated in the celebrations. The teacher couple exchanged cakes with each other on the occasion.

The video of the incident, shot by the teachers, went viral on social media platforms. The incident sparked public outcry, resulting in the transfer of the headmistress and the teacher.

The headmistress was transferred to Government Middle School in Venkeli village whereas teacher Sudhakar has been transferred to Government Primary School in Udayathiran town. Temporary teacher Sournamugi was relieved of her duties.
