In a case of rash and negligent driving, a tourist van collided with a stationary container lorry near the SIPCOT area in Thoothukudi on Friday afternoon, leaving more than 10 people, including children, severely injured.

THere were more than 10 family members in the van as they were returning home to Virudhunagar after visiting a temple at Kulasekarapattinam. While they were travelling on the Thoothukudi-Madurai bypass road, the van suddenly swerved out of control and rammed into the stationary container lorry parked on the roadside.

The van was extensively damaged in the crash and the passengers sustained serious injuries. Local residents helped in rescuing the victims. They were rushed to Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital.

Later in the evening, the injured were shifted to Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital for further treatment, an official from the hospital said.

Preliminary reports suggest that the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the loss of control. The SIPCOT police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
