Ahmedabad: In connection with the illegal clinical trials at VS Hospital, Dr Devang Rana, the suspended clinical trial head and associate professor, appeared before the investigating committee on Friday to record his statement. During the proceedings, Rana maintained his innocence. He has been accused of financial irregularities.
While talking to the media on Friday, Rana explained, "In 2021, we received a letter which stated that the then deputy municipal commissioner approved the private ethics committees. Subsequently, clinical trials were conducted with the approval of the medical college dean and the superintendent of VS Hospital. Documents related to these trials were stolen. I informed the dean and superintendent about this in writing."
He further stated, "This committee had the approval of the Drug Controller General of India (DGCI), based on which agreements were made with private ethics committees of five hospitals. A total of 58 clinical trials were conducted at VS Hospital, and no patient died. My responsibility was to monitor the clinical trials, for which I was paid."
