Nagpur: A city-bound private bus overturned into a roadside nullah near Bhiwapur on Thursday morning, leaving 41 passengers injured. The bus, travelling from Chamorshi via Mul was reportedly speeding, when the driver applied brakes to avoid a collision with a truck. The sudden manoeuvre caused the steering to lock, and the vehicle toppled into a roadside nullah after breaking the metal road barrier.
The cops sprang into action, rescuing the passengers from the overturned bus within ten minutes of being informed, which resulted in many passengers escaping what could have been fatal injuries. Out of the 45 passengers, a total of 41 were injured, including 22 men and 21 women. Eight passengers with serious injuries were shifted to the Govt Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur, while the rest received treatment at local facilities.
Several passengers sustained fractures and head injuries. Among them was Sukhdev Patra, a jeweller from Chandrapur, who suffered a fractured hand along with injuries to his back and forehead.
Eyewitnesses said the bus slipped into the nullah after the driver tried to avoid crashing into the truck. Villagers helped pull out trapped individuals before emergency teams arrived. A case of negligent driving has been registered against the driver. Assistant police inspector Jayprakash Nirmal from Bhiwapur police station said that no signs of alcohol consumption by the driver were found.
