Motihari: Immigration department officers on Friday arrested an American citizen at the Integrated Check Post (ICP) on India-Nepal border at Raxaul while he was trying to enter Nepal without any valid documents.
Nepal's Haraiya police arrested Etan, a resident of Ben City in Virginia, USA, and he is being questioned by police and other security agencies. According to sources, he came to India on a tourist visa, which expired in Oct last year. Even after the expiry of the visa, he was putting up in India illegally.
According to immigration office sources, Etan, born on Aug 7, 1983, at Minnesota, USA, was seen strolling near the border on Friday evening. When questioned, he said he was going to Nepal, but would come back to India.
He produced a passport before the immigration officer, which was found to have been issued on Aug 30, 2023, and was valid till Aug 29, 2033. He came to India on a tourist visa, which expired in Oct 2024. Even after the expiry of the visa, he was staying in India illegally.
Immigration officials said the rule states that one should not stay in a country for more than 180 days on a tourist visa. Sources said they have alerted the home ministry in India about it.
The police said he was trying to enter Nepal, so he was arrested on charges of violating international rules. The police investigation is going on and the higher authorities in Delhi were informed by the immigration and police about it.
