Pune: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city on Thursday, with day temperature continuing to rise on Wednesday and Lohegaon logging 43.6°C — which has been the season's highest, so far.
The yellow alert indicates the city's temperature will be on the higher side, said IMD officials.
Lohegaon has consistently recorded the highest temperature in the city over the last few weeks at over 40°C.
Meanwhile, Shivajinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 41.2°C — which was above normal by 3°, said SD Sanap, scientist, IMD, Pune.
He told TOI, "The anti-cyclonic circulation over central India and Maharashtra is influencing the state weather. Resultantly, there is no moisture incursion over any region of the state, leading to a significant rise in the day temperature in regions."
"There is no possibility of rainfall in the state for the next five days, at least. Chances of local conditions causing rain are low as there is no moisture incursion. Temperature in the city and other parts of the state will remain on the higher side for the next few days," Sanap added.
On Wednesday, Koregaon Park recorded 41.7°C day temperature, followed by Wadgaons Sheri at 40.8°C, Pashan at 40.8°C, Hadapsar at 40.7°C, Chinchwad at 40.7°C and Magarpatta at 40.4° C.
Commuters, especially those having to travel on two-wheelers, are facing a harrowing time. They are often spotted taking a break at juice centres along the streets.
"The heat has been unbearable for the last few weeks. It is impossible to ride bikes even for a just few kilometres," said Santosh Jadhav, a gig worker in the city.
Marathwada experienced similar heat on Wednesday with all four stations recording over 40°C temperature — Parbhani being the hottest in the region at 44.1° C.
The situation in Vidarbha is alarming as well with all 10 stations recording day temperature of over 40°C. Bramhapuri was the hottest place in the state at 45.6°C — which was above normal by 4.1°. Five other stations recorded maximum temperature over 44°C — Chandrapur at 45.5° C, followed by Akola at 45°C, Wardha at 44.7°C, Amravati at 44.6°C and Nagpur at 44.4°C.
