Chennai: Madras high court on Wednesday quashed the case filed against PMK leader and Rajya Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss in connection with a protest against Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC). Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan passed the order while allowing a plea moved by the former union minister.
In 2023, NLC acquired agricultural lands in Kathalazhai village in Cuddalore district for the expansion of its mining activity, during which paddy crops were destroyed. This led to a protest by over two thousand members of the PMK, led by Anbumani Ramadoss, at the entrance of the NLC office. Based on a complaint made by the Village Administrative Officer (VAO), Neyveli police registered a case against Anbumani Ramadoss and others for unlawful assembly.
Representing the petitioner, advocate K Balu contended that a criminal colour cannot be given to the exercise of a political leader exercising his democratic right. He added that the case was registered with political motive based on the complaint of a VAO.
