Kolkata: The body of a woman was found stuffed in a large, black trolley bag, abandoned on a vacant plot next to a drain in Baguiati on Tuesday morning. Her mouth was covered with a duct tape but her body did not bear any major physical injury. Police said they suspected she was either smothered to death or poisoned.
The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was around 5 ft in height, said police adding that she was clad in a yellow top and a pair of denim jeans. Her identity could not be ascertained till late on Tuesday. The body has been sent for post-mortem to confirm the reason and time of her death.
It was around 7.30 in the morning when a newspaper vendor first noticed the trolley bag in a vacant plot, next to a busy road leading to Deshbandhu Nagar, a bustling neighbourhood. "Curious, I got down from my cycle to check the trolley bag and saw strands of hair sticking out of it," said Palash Mondal, the vendor. He alerted residents and called the Baguiati PS.
Cops opened the suitcase to find the body inside. "The body did not decompose much, suggesting she was murdered recently," said a Bidhannagar City Police officer. "We have contacted others police stations to check missing persons' reports."
Some residents said that they did see the suitcase on Monday night but dismissed it as an abandoned object. Kaustav Kundu, who lives in a building opposite the dump yard, said, "I had looked out of my window and seen the suitcase around 9pm on Monday, but had not spared any thought. It wasn't there earlier in the evening."
Police are scanning CCTV footage from surrounding houses, businesses and traffic posts. "It's horrifying," said Swapan Sarkar, a resident who often walks his dog in the area. "To think something like this could happen here is terrifying."
This incident bears an eerie resemblance to a Feb case in Kumartuli, where a woman and her daughter were caught trying to dump a body, stuffed in a suitcase near the Hooghly.
