The terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which killed 28 tourists on Tuesday, was an attack on the nation, said Congress MP B. Manickam Tagore.

After participating in the bhoomi puja for the long-felt demand for a vehicular underpass at Pandanthal junction here on Wednesday, Mr. Tagore said the Congress did not want to politicise the incident of brutal killings.

“It is an act of cowardice in which innocent tourists were killed. People who do not want peace to return to Kashmir Valley are behind the crime,” Mr. Tagore added.

When asked whether the attack was an act of cross-border terrorism, Mr. Tagore said he did not want to jump to a conclusion before Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented his report on it.

“The government should present the facts and do not play politics with it,” the Virudhunagar MP said. The leaders who participated in the bhoomi puja observed silence for a minute as a mark of respect for the deceased persons.

Mr. Tagore said the previous UPA government had sanctioned ₹6 crore for constructing a bridge at Padanthal junction, where frequent fatal accidents were being reported.

However, the project had been delayed for long and now the project cost had increased to ₹31 crore. The MP said the work was expected to be completed by April 2025.

Sattur MLA A.R.R. Raghuraman and Municipal Chairman Gurusamy were present.
