Fire breaks out at Unnao car warehouse, 71 vehicles gutted
Kanpur: In a major fire at a car warehouse, 71 new cars were gutted causing estimated damage of several crores on Wednesday afternoon in Nehrubagh of Sadar Kotwali area, Unnao. No casualty was reported in the incident.
The fire spread rapidly due to the presence of flammable material in the unit. The cause of fire is yet to be found.
On being alerted, six fire tenders reached the site around 3pm and a team of twenty firefighters struggled for around three hours to extinguish the flames.
Chief fire officer Anoop Singh said that the fire was contained at the main site and efforts continue to douse the fire in adjoining area. The presence of flammable materials and oil-based products in the warehouse led to the rapid spread of the fire. The fire control operation faced challenges due to water shortage, requiring multiple trips to refill the tankers.
The five-year-old facility, located 15 kilometres from the district headquarters, served as a primary distribution centre for new car vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported that the intensity of the fire was sufficient to melt metal components of the vehicles. Fortunately, no employees were present during the incident, preventing any casualties. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of damages and investigating the fire's origin.
