The revered Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is set to resume from June 30, 2025, after a five-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pilgrimage will take place via the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district, located at an elevation of 17,000 feet, according to an official statement released on Monday.
The suspension of the yatra since 2020 had left thousands of devotees waiting. This year’s revival has been made possible through the joint efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the statement noted.
The Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) has been entrusted with the organization of the pilgrimage. The decision was finalised during a coordination meeting between the Uttarakhand government and the Ministry of External Affairs held in New Delhi.
Health check-ups for all participants will be conducted first in Delhi and again at Gunji before crossing into China. The comprehensive schedule ensures altitude acclimatization and safety for all pilgrims.
Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, located in the Tibet Autonomous Region under Chinese administration, are considered sacred by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of Bon. Hindus believe that Mount Kailash is the abode of Lord Shiva, and performing a parikrama (circumambulation) of the mountain and taking a dip in the holy Lake Manasarovar is believed to lead to spiritual liberation.
