Surat: A van driver was killed and two policemen were injured in an accident on National Highway 48, when a speeding truck hit four vehicles in the early hours of Monday. The injured policemen are stable, while the accused truck driver fled.
Radhekrishna Pande, a resident of Pipodara in Surat district who was from Paroi village of Sidhharth Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, was killed in the accident. Police van driver Kiransinh Solanki and head constable Shailesh Vasava suffered injuries.
The driver of the truck, Nisar Sattar Mev, who is from Karmla village in Alwar, was booked for rash driving, endangering the lives of others and other offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act.
Nisar was driving truck RJ-14-GN-5069 from Mumbai to Ahmedabad on NH 48. One lane of the highway was blocked due to a van — which had been driven by Pande — having overturned. Maintenance workers were trying to clear the highway with a tow-crane. The highway van had turned on its flashing lights and placed reflective barricades ahead of the accident spot.
A Surat rural traffic police van had joined the highway workers to smooth out traffic movements. At about 1.30am, the speeding truck crashed into the overturned van, then the tow-crane and the police van. After hitting these three vehicles, it crossed the divider and struck a truck coming from the opposite direction on the Ahmedabad to Mumbai track.
