Change party symbol from ‘hand’ to ‘lungi’, Himanta tells Cong
Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said Congress should change its symbol from ‘hand' to ‘lungi', prompting the grand old party to hit back saying "Godse's gun should be BJP's symbol".
Addressing a panchayat election campaign rally at Dhemaji, Sarma said during its govt's tenure in the state, Congress focussed only on ‘lungi', ‘kambal' (blanket) and ‘suta' (yarn).
"Congress means lungi. That is why I tell Congress that now is the time change your symbol from hand to lungi," Sarma said asking the people to tell Congress that "if you love lungi go to Bangladesh. We don't need lungi here but development."
Soon after Sarma's remarks, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah responded in a statement, "Is BJP going to decide what should be our party's symbol? If they are free to suggest that we change our symbol, how about we suggest that they change theirs to the gun used by Nathuram Godse! RSS-Jan Sangh-BJP's politics began with the three shots fired at Gandhiji."
Borah reminded Sarma that he became an MLA for the first time on the hand symbol. "Why does he forget that he went to the Governor's House three times over 15 years to be sworn in as a minister elected on the hand symbol? Has he lost so much memory?," Borah questioned.
"As regards the lungi, Congress considers it equal to other garments. In my own life, I wear a dhoti when I go to mamghar, I may wear a lungi when I am chilling at home. Today, in this political meeting, I am wearing a kurta-pyjama. Tomorrow, if I am travelling, I may wear a trouser," Borah added.
