Varanasi: The body of a woman, aged around 75, was found floating near Chet Singh Ghat under Bhelupur police station on Sunday morning. Inspector Gopal said the identity could not be ascertained and police were investigating the matter after sending her body for postmortem.
On Saturday evening, a group of fashion designing institute students from Delhi had seen the woman near Maha Nirvani Ghat and with the help of social worker Aman Kabir took her to an ashram.
The teacher and team leader of the fashion design students from Delhi, Satya Vijay, said they were passing through Shivala Ghat on Saturday evening when a local native sought their assistance in wrapping a sari around the woman. Vijay said the girl students, with help from a person who knew Telugu, came to know that she was from Hyderabad and her son had abandoned her in Kashi 15 days ago.
Vijay said they contacted social worker Aman Kabir to help them arrange a shelter for her and he assured them he would arrange her admission to an ashram in Sarnath the next morning. But on Sunday morning, on coming to know about the woman's death due to drowning at Chet Singh Ghat, the students and Aman reached the ghat and confirmed she was the same woman they had met on Saturday evening.
On Apr 15, in another similar incident, an ailing woman was found near Manikarnika ghat abandoned by her Kanpur-based daughter and son-in-law. When news went viral, the daughter returned and took her mother back.
