New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi conducted an initial survey of the site in Mustafabad's Shakti Vihar, where a house collapse killed 11 people on Saturday. According to the civic body, the structural design of the building did not adhere to the required load-bearing capacity and a detailed survey will be carried out to identify other such structures in the area.
"The structure of the building was not designed to bear the load. In the survey, it also appeared that other buildings in the area may have structural issues and may not possess adequate load-bearing elements," MCD stated. "In view of this, MCD will carry out a detail survey in the area to identify such buildings having fifth and sixth floors and not having adequate load-bearing elements. The civic body will take necessary action to seal them," it added.
MCD clarified that strong action would be taken against those found guilty. "While the field staff of the maintenance, building and sanitation departments are currently engaged in clearing the debris from the site as well as from the surrounding properties to ensure safety and support the rescue operations, action will be taken against the guilty," the civic body stated.
MCD commissioner Ashwani Kumar visited the site along with the deputy commissioner of the zone and other officials.
Immediately upon receiving the alert about the building collapse, field staff of the three departments rushed to the site along with necessary tools and personnel, including JCB machines and a labour force, MCD stated. The property is located in an unauthorised colony, which is densely populated and has narrow lanes. "As per a local inquiry and inputs from police sources, the said property, with an approximate plot area of 60 square yards, consisted of a ground floor plus three additional storeys," the civic body said.
On local claims that some work for joining shops was going on on the ground floor, MCD denied having any information.
