In an interesting development, the Communist Party of India (CPI) has joined hands with the United Democratic Front (UDF) to defeat the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and secure the vice president’s seat in Ramankari panchayat, Alappuzha.
In an election held to the panchayat council here on Saturday, CPI candidate Remyamol Sajeev was elected vice president after defeating Molji Rajesh of the CPI(M). Remyamol secured seven out of 13 votes, while the CPI(M) candidate received only five. One vote was declared invalid.
Reason for election
The election was triggered by the resignation of Sheena Rajappan, a UDF member, who stepped down from the post to make way for another Congress member. However, the UDF did not field a candidate of its own. Sensing an opportunity, the CPI moved ahead with Remyamol’s nomination and the UDF strategically decided to back her.
Earlier in June 2024, CPI(M) rebel R. Rajendrakumar was ousted from the president’s post with the support of the Congress. Subsequently, R. Rajumon, a Congress member, was elected as president with backing from CPI(M) members.
Two factions
The CPI(M) continues to grapple with internal strife in Ramankari where the party unit is now split into two factions, with one enjoying the backing of the official party leadership. Over recent months, several CPI(M) leaders and workers have crossed over to the CPI.
