The Saroornagar police arrested two individuals for allegedly attempting to extort money from a sweet shop owner by falsely claiming that a sweet contained dried shrimp.
The incident took place at Sri Balaji Mithai Bhandar on Venkateswara Colony, said an officer from Saroornagar police station.
“On Saturday, the accused, identified as Chirra Kotesh and Vadlakonda Naresh, visited the shop around 1 p.m., purchased and consumed sweets, and soon after, pretended to vomit upon claiming they found a dried shrimp in the sweet. They then allegedly threatened the shop owner, posing as journalists and demanding money in exchange for not posting the incident on social media,” explained the officer.
When the shop owner contacted police, the duo fled the scene. A complaint was lodged, following which the Saroornagar police arrested and questioned the suspects.
“Investigations revealed that the two men had likely brought the dried shrimp with them as part of a premeditated plan to create a scene and extort money. Naresh was found carrying a fake YouTube press ID card under the name, RE5,” added the officer.
Police are now probing whether the accused have used similar tactics at other sweet shops in the area.
