Ludhiana: Dwellers of the city's Sanjay Gandhi EWS Colony staged a protest at Tajpur Road on Friday evening, blocking traffic for more than 90 minutes as they demanded urgent relief from weeks of sewage that has flooded their homes and left streets reeking.
Led by local councillor, Chatarvir Singh, the demonstrators have alleged that for the past 20 days, raw sewage has been overflowing in their locality due to a choked sewer line and the closure of drainage points leading into the Buddha Dariya. According to the councillor, the authorities shut the discharge outlets without first cleaning the blocked line — triggering a sanitation crisis that has now seeped into residents' homes.
Chatarvir Singh said during the protest: "This isn't just filth — this is a public health emergency. People are forced to live in hell. And now, with the rains approaching, things will only get worse. The risk of disease is growing by the day." Traffic came to a standstill along Tajpur Road as residents, frustrated by weeks of inaction, held their ground in protest. Police arrived on the scene and attempted to negotiate with the crowd, but the demonstration continued late into the evening.
The councillor further alleged that repeated appeals to local administrative officials have been ignored. "The officials have all but abandoned our area. All municipal manpower has been shifted to the Ludhiana West constituency ahead of the byelection," he claimed. The councillor urged the administration to reopen the Buddha Dariya drainage points temporarily to relieve the flooding, at least until the sewer lines can be cleaned properly and restored. As of publication, efforts by local authorities to pacify the protesters were in progress.
