Cyberfraud: CBI arrests man for using Delhi Jal Board logo to deceive people
Patna: CBI has arrested a man from Patna for allegedly using the logo of Delhi Jal Board (DJL) to deceive gullible persons into installing a malicious software on their phones to steal sensitive data, the central investigating agency said here on Saturday.
Bittu Kumar was arrested from a petrol pump in Patna on Thursday while he was swapping a debit card to withdraw cash, the agency said in a statement, adding that the accused was taken to Delhi on a four-day transit remand.
The CBI registered an FIR on April 15 based on a complaint lodged by a Delhi woman alleging that she was persuaded to install a malware-laced mobile application disguised with the DJB logo, a CBI spokesperson said.
"The application fraudulently claimed to help resolve pending issues related to water bills and avoid service disconnection. Once installed, the malware allegedly allowed Bittu to access the complainant's WhatsApp account, financial data and other sensitive information," the agency said in the statement.
"Further, the WhatsApp accounts of victims were being used to spread the malware, malicious links showing chain of compromise in WhatsApp accounts. The DLJ logo was also used as display picture (DP) in their WhatsApp accounts," the CBI said.
"After arresting Bittu, the CBI conducted searches at three places which led to recovery of 11 cellphones, 14 debit cards of other account holders, cash, note vending machine and other incriminating material," the CBI spokesperson said.
"After Bittu's arrest, he was produced before a competent court in Patna. The court granted four-day transit remand to the CBI for taking the accused to Delhi. Bittu was produced before the competent court in Delhi on Saturday," the CBI said, adding, "Further investigation in the case is continuing."
