Cops plan to bring 2nd accused in cyber fraud case
Berhampur: Police on Saturday claimed to have found several clues after interrogating a cyber criminal from Gujarat who was allegedly involved in duping a teacher couple from Ganjam district of Rs 34.50 lakh through ‘digital arrest' scam in Jan.
Shishpar alias Subhash (31) and Govindram alias Goverdhanram (35) of Falaudi, Jodhpur in Rajasthan were arrested by Bhuj police on Feb 2 in connection with a cyber fraud case in Gujarat. During investigation, Bhuj police found the accused were also involved in duping the couple from Kukudakhandi and informed their Berhampur counterparts.
Berhampur cyber police team requested the remand of Subhash through the sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM). After obtaining permission from the court, Subhash was brought for further investigation four days ago. He was produced in a local court on Friday, police said.
"During interrogation, we obtained several vital clues related to cyber fraud," said SP (Berhampur), Saravana Vivek M. He said they were trying to bring Govindram on remand. He is now in a Rajasthan jail, police said.
Govindram is the main accused suspected of carrying out cyber crimes across the country by posing as a CBI and ED officer. "More information will be found only after interrogating him," said the SP. "Their involvement in other cases and other persons in the gang are being investigated," he said.
Police said the woman teacher on Jan 29 filed a police complaint, alleging she was duped by unidentified cyber fraudsters. The accused charged the victim with being involved in a money laundering case and put the couple under ‘digital arrest'. Following this, the victim transferred Rs 34.50 lakh for ‘priority investigation'.
A criminal case was also registered against the accused in Madhya Pradesh, where they allegedly duped a victim of Rs 2.38 lakh through digital arrest, police said.
