Bhajan singer kills wife to marry lover, both held
Ajmer: The police Thursday arrested a 33-year-old bhajan singer and his paramour over the alleged murder of his 24-year-old pregnant wife on April 13 in Ajmer.
The singer identified as Shiv wanted to marry his lover Rekha (30) whom he met during a bhajan programme at a temple five years ago.
According to police, they were notified on April 14 about the suspicious death of Shobha Devi (24) at her residence in Dodhiyana village. Upon inspection, authorities found her neck bruised. The body was sent for post-mortem. The following day, the victim's father, Amardas, lodged a complaint accusing his son-in-law of murder, police said.
Ajmer SP Vandita Rana said, "There was suspicion and therefore teams were constituted to collect the evidence."
Further investigation revealed that Shiv met Rekha, wife of Kalu, during a bhajan programme at Dodhiyana's Mataji temple five years ago. Their relationship developed as they continued meeting secretly. Shiv wished to marry Rekha, but she insisted he leave his wife before she would abandon her husband.
On April 13, Shiv departed for a bhajan programme to return the following day. Instead, he returned home late at night and climbed the roof. After confirming his wife was asleep, he strangled her with a muffler and left. According to police, during questioning, Shiv maintained she died of a heart attack. Both suspects were subsequently arrested.
