JNU fires prof. accused of sexually harassing Japan Embassy official

Published - April 18, 2025 12:52 am IST - NEW DELHI

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has sacked a professor accused of sexually harassing an official working at the Embassy of Japan, a source said on Thursday. Several complaints against the professor had been received in the past, said the source.

The alleged incident took place at a university event a few months ago and was brought to the notice of JNU’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). After a three-month probe, the ICC deemed the charges credible and the university’s Executive Council decided to remove him from his position without benefits.

Meanwhile, another faculty member from the Environmental Science Department was dismissed over corruption charges in a research project. The case has been referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation. “These decisions will send a strong message that there will be no compromise on integrity and ethics at the university,” said an official.
