Pune: A road widening project launched by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) nearly two months ago between Welcome Hall Chowk and Omkar Garden in Kondhwa has now resulted in an accident—just as residents had warned. The project, which was intended to improve traffic flow in the Pargenagar area, remains grossly incomplete, turning into a daily threat for commuters.
Only 50 to 80 meters of the road were excavated before work came to a standstill. What’s worse, a light junction box has been left dangerously in the middle of the unfinished stretch, creating a serious safety hazard. Despite repeated appeals from citizens, PMC has not taken adequate action—leading to a preventable accident at the site this week.
“This is exactly what we feared,” said Sameer Punjabi, a local resident who had flagged the issue just days ago. “If there was no plan to complete it, why start the work? This is not just poor planning—it’s negligence that is risking lives.”
Residents had posted on social media five days ago, highlighting the unsafe condition of the road and urging immediate intervention from PMC. Their warnings went unheeded.
The site remains hazardous for both motorists and pedestrians, particularly at night or during low visibility. Locals are now demanding that PMC prioritize completion of the project and ensure proper safety measures are put in place immediately.
Citizens insist that accountability and swift action are essential to prevent further mishaps.
