Catawba County substitute teacher charged with statutory rape

NEWTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Catawba County woman was arrested on statutory rape charges Thursday.

According to Catawba County Sheriff’s Office records, 33-year-old Katelyn Schronce of Conover was charged with statutory rape of a victim 15 years old or younger.

She has been a substitute teacher with the Catawba County school system. District officials say her employment with them was immediately terminated upon the arrest.

“There is no indication at this time that the charges are connected to her employment in our district,” their statement reads. “Ms. Schronce began serving as a substitute in October 2024 and has been immediately released from her duties. The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority, and we will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement as their investigation continues.”

Schronce is being held in the Catawba County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
