Tremors in the limbs, loss of motor control, and emotional turmoil, the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can deeply impact a person’s daily life. But a new, non-invasive treatment is bringing renewed hope to patients.
KIMS in Hyderabad has introduced MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS), an alternative to surgery that has shown success in eliminating tremors in just a few hours, the doctors said during an awareness programme conducted at the hospital on Thursday.
Until now, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery was the go-to option for those who did not respond to medication. MRgFUS, however, offers a gentler approach, no incisions, no anaesthesia. “This technique uses high-intensity ultrasound waves, guided by MRI, to precisely target the affected area in the brain without the need for surgery. Patients often walk out of the procedure room with significantly reduced or completely gone tremors. The progress is monitored live, and the results are immediate in many cases,” explained Dr. Manas Kumar Panigrahi, Chief Neurosurgeon and Head of Neurosurgery at KIMS.
