Jaipur: A 45-year-old domestic help was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly decamping with Rs 32 lakh in cash and jewellery from the residence of a prominent businessman in the upscale Civil Lines area. The accused, Gyarsi Ram, a native of Dholpur district, was arrested after a police chase spanning various states.
DCP (South) Digant Anand said the accused was arrested with a large quantity of stolen cash, gold, and silver jewellery. According to Sodala SHO Surendra Singh, the theft came to light after a complaint was filed on March 30, alleging that a domestic aide fled with valuables and switched off his phone. The accused, Laxman alias Gyarsi Ram, worked with the family since 2006.
In a bizarre twist, the accused left a threatening message on a disposable plate, warning the family of dire consequences if they attempted to track him down. A police team followed his trail across Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh before apprehending him.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused initially planned to steal just Rs 2–3 lakh to buy an autorickshaw. However, realising the opportunity presented by the family's frequent travel, he made away with much more than planned.
"He packed the cash and jewellery in a hurry and was stunned to discover the amount he actually took," said an official.
The accused first bought a new mobile phone for Rs 22,000 and later splurged over Rs 1 lakh on expensive hotels, liquor, and partying while on the run. Police said the man planned the theft for several months. Police are verifying the exact value of stolen items and to recover the remaining cash and jewellery.
