A man transporting over 12 kilograms of ganja worth ₹6.5 lakh from Odisha to Maharashtra was arrested at the Secunderabad Railway Station during a joint operation by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) on Thursday.
The accused was identified as 31-year-old Sameera Bishoyi, a labourer from Dengapadar village in Ganjam district, Odisha. According to the officials, Bishoyi was caught while attempting to transport the ganja-laden suitcase into the general coach of the Devagiri Express bound for Dadar. His accomplice, 29-year-old Munna Nayak, from Mohana in Gajapati district of Odisha, managed to flee the scene.
The police kept a watch on a trolley suitcase left unattended on Platform Six. Later in the afternoon, Bishoyi returned to retrieve the bag, and was arrested while attempting to carry it towards the Devagiri Express.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that Bishoyi had been lured into the ganja smuggling operation by Nayak, a friend. Bishoyi, who had previously worked as a sales boy in Thane, Maharashtra, returned to his village six months ago due to financial constraints. About five months ago, he reportedly befriended Nayak, who offered him ₹10,000 per trip to assist in transporting ganja consignments to Maharashtra.
The duo had already made prior deliveries to locations including Dadar, Thane and Kalyan. In this particular instance, they had boarded the Konark Express from Brahmapur, Odisha, on April 16 and reached Secunderabad the following day. They chose to travel via Telangana to avoid heightened checks in Maharashtra. However, the police presence at the station forced them to abandon the suitcase and flee temporarily.
Alongside the seized ganja, the police recovered a mobile phone and a general class railway ticket to Dadar from the possession of the accused. Efforts are underway to trace Nayak.
