Churches commemorate Jesus’s last supper ahead of Good Friday today
Patna: City churches held special communion services and prayers on Maundy Thursday, which commemorates the last supper Lord Jesus Christ shared with his 12 disciples before his crucifixion on the cross on Calvary Hills on Good Friday.
Several congregations included a foot-washing ceremony, representing Jesus's humble service as church premises resonated with prayers, praises and introspection. Queen of Apostles Church in Kurji, Padri Ki Haveli in Patna City, Sacred Hearts in Patliputra, St Joseph's Pro-Cathedral Church in Bankipore and Believers Eastern Church among others also held overnight vigils to reflect upon Christ's time spent in the Garden of Gethsemane.
A grand religious ceremony was held at Kurji church. The main celebrant was Fr Selvin Xavier SJ, the parish priest of Kurji. Father Alwin Vaz S J delivered a sermon, stating, "It is not just a ritual but the ultimate expression of love that serves by kneeling down. Jesus teaches us to serve and be humble within the family as well."
A highlight of the ceremony was the ritual of washing the feet of 12 disciples by Father Xavier, Father Arockiasamy S J and Father Sanjay Marandi SJ. Over 5,000 devotees participated in the ceremony.
A mass was conducted at Padri Ki Haveli. "On this Holy Thursday, many years ago, Lord Jesus Christ taught all his followers that regardless of status, whether rich or poor, everyone should be considered equal. To demonstrate this, He washed the feet of His 12 disciples. For this profound teaching, not only the Christian community but people of all religions around the world regard Lord Jesus Christ as a teacher. He provided the world with a supreme example of love and taught that if a Teacher can treat His servant as equal, He can win hearts," said Father Praveen Lobo OFM Cap, the parish priest.
The mass sacrifice was offered by the parish priest, assistant priests Fathers Pradeep and Suresh. The event was attended by former vice-chairman of minority commission Ambrose Patrick.
Good Friday will mark the ‘Veneration of the Cross'. A tableau on Stations of the Cross was re-enacted from Loyola High School to Kurji to commemorate the passion and crucifixion of Christ.
