7 arrested for stone-pelting during Sunday’s anti-Waqf stir in Silchar
Silchar: Police in Silchar have arrested seven people in connection with stone-pelting incidents targeting security forces during an anti-Waqf (Amendment) Act protest in Madhurband last Sunday.
A senior police official said a case was registered for the violent activities during the rally. Based on this, police conducted an operation on Tuesday evening in the Bagadahar and Kashipur areas, leading to the arrests.
The arrested people were remanded to judicial custody by a Silchar court following their interrogation.
SP (Cachar), Numal Mahatta, on Wednesday said further operations are underway in and around the city to apprehend more accused individuals involved in the incident.
The clashes occurred during a protest rally against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. People from the minority community, hailing from Berenga, Madhurband, and Kanakpur, gathered at Badri Bridge in the morning and marched to an open field in Madhurband.
While the demonstration proceeded peacefully with placards and slogans, tensions escalated when some protesters staged a sit-in at Chamragudam locality. Reports suggest that a section of demonstrators began hurling stones at police personnel, prompting them to use batons in retaliation.
In response to the incident, the district magistrate of Cachar issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) on Sunday evening. The orders restrict gatherings of more than five individuals without prior permission and impose a ban on rallies or demonstrations unless officially authorised.
