The wife, daughter, and brother-in-law of a milk farmer, A. Subramanian, 55, were arrested on Tuesday on charges of murdering him at M.P.K. Pudupatti.

The accused have been identified as Eswari, 50, her daughter Devayani, 28, and Eswari’s younger brother Selvakumar, 45.

Eswari claimed that while she was away at work, her husband, who was engaged in the sale of milk, had ended his life at home on Tuesday, after a quarrel with her.

Instructed by the Superintendent of Police, D. Kannan, a team of police, led by Additional Superintendent of Police, K. Ashokan, conducted an inquiry. Though circumstances pointed to suicide, the police got suspicious over some external injuries on Subramanian’s body and interrogated his wife and daughter.

During the interrogation, they reportedly confessed to murdering him with the help of Selvakumar, a mason.

What happened?

According to the police, Devayani, a mother of two, had been fighting with her husband and living with her parents.

Subramanian, however, scolded her over this and insisted that she return to live with him. On Tuesday, a quarrel erupted between Subramanian and his daughter. In a fit of rage, Eswari attacked him with an iron rod. Though he fell to the ground, he continued to shout at them.

The police said that Eswari had called her brother home and the trio strangled Subramanian to death and made it appear as though he died by suicide.
